The Bombay West Rotary Institute for the Deaf Kamla Dharamshi Narsee Shruti School was established in June 1973 by the Rotary Club of Bombay West. It was a one-of-a-kind endeavour aimed at bridging the gap of non-availability of any teaching and learning facilities for deaf children, covering Dadar to Borivali in the western suburbs and Dadar to Bhandup in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. It is a well-known fact that children learn faster when trained in their mother tongue, and keeping this in mind, four mediums of instruction were introduced.
Shruti School is the first school in the country for deaf children where four mediums of instruction are used. Within three years of its establishment, the student strength rose to 40, showcasing the urgent need for such an academic institution to benefit deaf children. 12th June 1973 was a day of rejoicing and hope for the parents of nine deaf children admitted to the class for training these children.
Our aim to provide preschool and primary education to hearing-impaired children with the goal of mainstreaming them into schools for normally hearing children is commendable. This approach not only ensures that hearing-impaired children receive a strong educational foundation but also promotes inclusivity and integration within the broader society.
